Vidura - an epic example from the Mahabharata

illustrated by Satadhama devi dasi

The saintly Vidura, the incarnation of Dharmaraja, the lord of justice and death, always offered wise and well-wishing counsel to his blind brother, king Dhritarastra, sitting on the throne of Hastinapura.

However the old king, further blinded by his attachment for his wicked sons headed by Duryodhana, was not able to heed the sage's advice. He gave free rein to his wicked sons to continue their adharmic activities. Eventually they got what they deserved by the inescapable law of karma. By his weakness in administration, king Dhritarastra brought on many terrible events, culminating in the battle of Kurukshetra.

In the 18-day war, the saintly Pandavas guided by Lord Krishna, slaughtered the 100 sons of king Dhritarastra together with their military force. The greatly lamenting Dhritarastra was now bereft of all power. Still Vidura came to his assistance and offered the downfallen king spiritual advice by which he may yet save his soul.
